Synthesis, Structural Characterization and Application to Polymerization of Cobalt(II) Complexes Containing Tridentate N,N',X-Iminomethylpyridines

We have synthesized new series of cobalt(II) complexes by the reaction of [CoCl2·6H2O] with tridentate ligands [Ln] (Ln = LA – LF), in which LA = (E)-N1,N1-dimethyl-N2-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)ethane-1,2-diamine, LB = (E)-2-methoxy-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)ethanamine, LC = (E)-2-(piperidin-1-yl)-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)ethanamine, LD = (E)-2-morpholino-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)ethanamine, LE = (E)-N1,N1-dimethyl-N3-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)propane-1,3-diamine and LF = (E)-3-methoxy-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)propan-1-amine, respectively. New cobalt(II) complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic methods such as 1H-NMR, IR, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography. The catalytic activity of Co(II) complexes towards polymerizations of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) and rac-lactide were investigated.
